Natalie Merchant performed songs from her latest album “Leave Your Sleep” at Le Poisson Rouge for The Fourth Annual PEN Cabaret.

Rakesh Satyal emceed the event, while performing some classic jazz songs also.

Nigerian poet and novelist Ben Okri read a poem.

Georgian writer and performance artist Irakli Kakabadze read his poems with such high energy!

Natalie Merchant has a magical voice. I spent countless hours listening to Tigerlily during my high school years, and I was so excited when she put out her new album!

2009 Kollaboration New York

I was at NYU’s Skirball Center to cover the wonderful Kollaboration NY on an assignment for NYdiary, a Korean website devoted to exploring the culture of New York. (Link to be provided when it launches this summer.) Kollaboration is a non-profit organization devoted to celebrate the talents Asian American musicians and performing artists. Here are some images from the sold-out event. Click on each image to view it in full size:

My personal favorite was the first competitor Tim Be Told, a rock band from Virginia.

Hip hop group Magnetic North and Taiyo Na

16 year old Dylan Schroth, a singer/songwriter from Jersey City.

R&B singer Marie Choi

COBU performed some amazing taiko drumming and dancing

Guest performer comedian Eliot Chang

Bollywood Axion, whose dance was both energetic and graceful

Project D, a dance company from New Jersey, won the second place.

The amazing Kevin So, the singer/songwriter who also won the second place

Paul “PK” Kim, a comedian and the founder of Kollaboration, hosted the show. Roy Choi the executive producer of Kollaboration is sitting at the piano (brown shirt).

The guest judges. Yin Chang from Gossip Girl, Brigette Noh the executive producer for Chaos Theory Music, and Benson Lee the director of Planet B-Boy.

COBU won the grand prize. They did a marvelous job of fusing Japanese traditional music with modern sounds and dacing.

Ko-Ryo Dance Theater

I had the privilege of photographing Koryo Dance Theater (http://www.koryodance.com/) for their preparation of a showcase in Washington DC. Not only I was impressed by the grace and beauty of the pieces they performed, but I was truly touched by the love and care the director Sunhwa Chung showed to the dancers and everyone else who was present. I have no doubt that this company will become one of the finest in New York with all the charm they possess.

For the final bow, the director Chung invited her daughter Sarang onto the stage. Sarang lovingly jumped on her, and the director took the bow with her still in her arms.

The latest Nouveau Classical Project concert was held 5/28/2009 at Nabi Gallery. It featured art by Elsie Hill, fashion by Coh N. and Rogues Gallery, along with music by Bach, Messiaen, Shostakovich and my favorite Erik Satie.
